Software Developer
Nashville Software School | Oct 2022 - June 2023
Intensive full-time, nine month software development practicum focusing on Java software engineering using AWS technologies. The program culminates in a web based capstone project designed to emulate working on a real world team, using Agile values with the Scrum framework.
- Daily hands-on application of computer science concepts, including algorithms, data structures, and object oriented programming with Java via group and individual projects.
- Created and modified backend server side software in Java modeling real world problems.
- Regular use of Git & GitHub for source code/version control, creating and reviewing pull requests, resolving merge conflicts, using project boards and issue tracking.
- Direct experience building and debugging software applications using AWS services like CloudFormation, CloudWatch, DynamoDB, Lambda, RDS, S3, and SAM.
- Solution Design: regular use of PlantUML to document software.
- Practiced testing with the JUnit and Mockito testing frameworks.
- Implemented dependency injection with the Dagger framework.
Why Change Careers
Making the decision to change careers from my previous industry to cloud engineering was not an easy one, but it was the right decision for me. Here are some reasons why I was drawn to the field of cloud engineering:
- Rapidly growing field: As more companies are moving their operations to the cloud, the demand for qualified cloud engineers is rapidly increasing. This presents a tremendous opportunity for career growth and development.
- Technological advancement: The cloud engineering field is at the forefront of technological advancement. Being a part of this exciting and innovative field means having the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies and contribute to the development of new tools and services.
- Problem-solving opportunities: Cloud engineering requires a lot of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. I was attracted to the challenge of finding solutions to complex problems and the satisfaction of seeing a project through from start to finish.
- Flexibility: Cloud engineering is a field that allows for a great deal of flexibility in terms of where and how you work. This is especially attractive to me as someone who values a healthy work-life balance.
